EMF and Children: What Parents Should Know

By Bindi, Bio Protective Systems | Last reviewed: May 2026

If you're here, you've probably started wondering whether all the Wi-Fi, tablets, and phones around your children are something to think about. You're not overthinking it. It's a fair question, and this page will give you the facts, the practical stuff, and an honest take on where the science actually stands.

Why parents think about this

Children today are growing up surrounded by wireless technology in a way no previous generation has. Wi-Fi at home and school, tablets from age 2 or 3, smartphones by 10. That adds up to a lot of wireless exposure over a lifetime.

Children aren't small adults. Their skulls are thinner, their brains are still developing, and they'll have decades more exposure than anyone alive today has had. That doesn't automatically mean the exposure is harmful. But it does mean the question deserves a proper answer.

What the science says

We'll be straight with you: the science isn't settled.

The World Health Organisation classifies radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2B). That's the same category as pickled vegetables and talcum powder. It means there's limited evidence, not proof.

Major studies, including work by Imperial College in the UK and the US National Toxicology Program, have produced mixed results. Some found biological effects at high exposure levels. Others found nothing. None have proven that everyday Wi-Fi or phone use causes illness in children.

Where most researchers agree: the precautionary principle makes sense for children. Reduce unnecessary exposure where it's practical. Don't turn it into something to worry about.

What you can do today

All of this is free and backed by common sense:

At home

  • No devices in the bedroom at night. This is the big one. Children sleep 10 to 12 hours. That's a long time next to something emitting a signal.
  • Use aeroplane mode. If a tablet is being used for reading or white noise, aeroplane mode turns off all wireless signals while keeping the content available.
  • Keep baby monitors at a distance. At least 1 metre from the cot. If you're buying a new one, consider wired.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi overnight. A timer plug costs under £10 and does it automatically.
  • Wired connections for family computers. Ethernet is faster anyway.

With phones and tablets

  • Speaker or wired headphones for calls. Holding a phone against the ear is the highest-exposure moment.
  • Don't carry phones in trouser pockets. A bag or jacket pocket creates distance.
  • Less screen time helps regardless. Less time on a device means less exposure, better sleep, better focus.

At school

  • Many UK schools use Wi-Fi throughout the building. You can ask your school about their setup. Some have moved to wired connections in classrooms, or turn Wi-Fi off when it's not being used.
  • The Austrian Medical Association and several European government advisories have recommended reducing wireless exposure in schools. The UK hasn't made a formal recommendation, but the conversation is happening.

When products might help

If you've done the practical steps and want to go further, our products work alongside your existing tech. Nothing gets blocked or interfered with.

The effects are based on customer feedback, not clinical trials. Plenty of parents tell us their children sleep better and seem calmer. We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can see for yourself.

What we don't say

We think it matters to be clear about this:

  • We don't claim EMF causes illness in children
  • We don't claim our products prevent or treat anything
  • We don't think our products replace the practical steps above
  • We don't think parents should be scared into buying anything

Sensible steps, not fear. Free measures first. Products for people who've done those and want to go further.
